Data Centre Optimisation Analysis

Increase the energy and resource efficiency in your data centre

Data Centre Optimisation Analysis

The DAXTEN data centre optimisation analysis takes a snapshot of the current environment and gives concrete suggestions what can be done to optimise your existing data centre. We are not trying to sell new CRAC units, new racks or complex and expensive hardware to optimise the data centre. In most cases small, simple and inexpensive changes in the data centre can have a huge effect on the energy costs and intake temperatures on the racks. Our philosophy is to optimise what is already there. As a result, density can be increased, hardware failures are minimised, energy costs are reduced and new data centre builds are no longer required.

DAXTEN’s highly specialised team will spend several hours taking measurements in your data centre and analysing your existing environment. We will measure the static pressure below the raised floor, measure hot spots, relative humidity and bypass airflow. Based on this information, we will give you a report showing the health of the data centre cooling as well as give concrete suggestions showing the steps to eliminate problems.

By implementing the suggested solutions, energy consumption is reduced, server density can be increased, hotspots are reduced or even eliminated, hardware failure is reduced and the health of the data centre is improved. In many cases energy costs can be reduced by more than 50% with an ROI of less than 6-12 months.

Data Center Optimisation Analysis and Efficiency Assessment

This customised analysis has been designed to meet customer objectives for data center energy efficiency. DAXTEN’s highly trained specialists meet with the client to identify their business requirements and to establish the goals of the Efficiency Assessment. Potential coverage includes:

Air Condition and General Environmental Conditions

  • Air Flow – Evaluate air volume, velocity, cold air supply and hot air return
  • Capacity Planning – Evaluate total cooling capacity relative to current and planned usage
  • High Density Cabinets – Examine high density cabinets for sufficient airflow and temperature levels
  • Hot Spots – Identify cabinets where hot spots are an issue
  • Plenums – Evaluate air volume and pressure under the raised floor
  • Relative Humidity – Assess relative humidity throughout the data centre
  • Temperature – Assess thermal conditions where temperatures could adversely effect equipment reliability or availability

Electrical System Capacity and Design

  • Capacity Planning – Evaluate total power capacity relative to current and planned usage
  • Expansion Planning – Identify situations where the expansion of the power system is impossible or difficult to implement

Infrastructure Observations and Measurements

  • Cable Management – Analyse the cable paths for airflow blockage
  • Overhead Ducting – Evaluate the airflow in ducting or drop ceilings for return airflow
  • Raised Floor – Test the floor tiles airflow and hi plume stratification

Efficiency Assessment

  • Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) – Establish a PUE value and examine the implications reducing this efficiency benchmark
  • Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE) – Establish a DCiE value and examine the implications reducing this efficiency benchmark

Optimisation Improvement Recommendations

  • PUE/DCiE Improvements – Identification of specific steps that can be taken to improve these measures
  • Infrastructure Improvements – Specific recommendations that will improve efficiency and hardware reliability
